Barcelona.- Today we’ve seen the last day of racing in Barcelona waters. A strange local phenomena brought thick mist that accompanied sailors on their last two races. No visibility forced the competitors to sharpen their feelings. The event started on Tuesday and a total of twelve races were completed in perfect wind conditions of sea breeze and good temperatures. Onan Barreiros/Aaron Sarmiento from RCN Gran Canaria (Toyota Canarias) and Alexa Bezel and Anne-Sophie Thilo from (SVT YCH/CNPulli) were the respective winners on the 470 class . An interesting battle has been seen on the 470 fleet. The Olympic diploma sailors, Onan Barreiros/Aaron Sarmiento obtained their recompense after 12 races. The canary pair were winners of the 470 M World Cup and are currently on 4th position in the ISAF World Rankings. Their season started with some delay due to a severe injury on Aaron’s neck but now short future looks again brilliant for them. Last day of racing the podium was completed in favor of an experienced Austrian crew, Matthias Schmid/Florian Reichstaedter currently on 5th position on the ISAF ranking and the new Argentinean project of Lucas Calabrase/Juan de la Fuente. The Austrian team, that ended the event in 3rd position, had a perfect last day of racing taking high risks on their tactics with an unstable breeze and scored a 2nd and a bullet. The success of one alpine team took out from the medal positions their Swiss neighbors Matias Buhler/Felix Steiger . The Swiss pair has set their training base in Barcelona from autumn 2009. The overall 2nd position was for Lucas Calabrese/Juan de la Fuente. Young talent, in that case in hands of the skipper, is combined with the vast knowledge of the 470 class of the Olympic medalist crew Juan de la Fuente. No chance since the beginning for the other crews in the 470 Women class. The Swiss young team of Alexa Bezel/Anne Sophie Thilo won all the races with authority. Tara Pacheco/Berta Betanzos crew, current world junior 470 champions, announced on the last minute that they were not participating due to an injury on Berta’s knee. We wish them all the best on a quick recovery. Barcelona Olympic Sailing Week has been rescued after two years of no racing by a new and young organizing team, that joined the effort of two nautical clubs: Real Club Nautico de Barcelona and Reial Club Marítim de Barcelona and two federations: Federació Catalana de Vela and Real Federación Española de Vela. With the horizon of 2012 470 World Championships in the future, the organizers are working hard to design and built a new race focused on innovating. Barcelona International Sailing Center will probably be the future base of this event. For more information, please visit www.bosw.org
